I'm Adrian Knight, and I have a Master's in Depreciation, and automobiles have been my passion since my childhood. Picture this, a young boy perched on the stoop of his parents' brownstone, naming every make, model, and year of the vehicles cruising by. I'd even challenge my father with a wager—if I identified the next 10 cars correctly, a 50-cent candy bar was my reward. This automotive fascination stuck with me, becoming a fundamental part of who I am.
Post high school, I was committed to furthering my education. My love for vehicles naturally led me towards becoming a mechanic. Consequently, I enrolled at Lincoln Tech Institute for my ASE certification. My stint at Lincoln Tech was an eye-opening experience—I was amongst a community of car enthusiasts. It felt like heaven. But, as time wore on, I realized my interests diverged from my peers. They thrived under the hoods of their own Hondas and Toyotas, relishing every oil change, brake repair, and tune-up. I discovered that my heart was not in the same place.
After a year of automotive schooling at Lincoln Tech, I decided to switch gears and dove headfirst into the world of retail customer service. In the next half-dozen years, I worked with companies like Costco Wholesale, Apple, Bloomingdales, and Ikea, refining my skills in customer service. Yet, beneath it all, my ardor for cars endured. I decided it was time to re-enter the automotive world and landed a job at Carmax.
Carmax, a company that puts customers first, was an instant hit with me. My knowledge of vehicles coupled with a knack for customer service got me recognized as the Employee of the Month in sales within just three months. I thought this was my happy ending, but I yearned for more—I yearned to be closer to the vehicles. That's when I discovered the Buyer role at Carmax. If you've ever had your vehicle appraised at Carmax, that's the work of a buyer. I dove into this role in 2014, and over the following 8 years, I appraised, valued, and bought thousands of vehicles, attended off-site auctions, and even managed Carmax's wholesale auctions.
Carmax was a fantastic journey, but I felt the need for a more personalized touch in car buying. After 8 years with Carmax, I joined an auto broker service, assisting clients through their car purchasing journey from start to finish. However, I encountered industry practices that didn't sit well with me.
